Tips to cut down on apartment overage charges

Use less water. This is the number one contributer to overage charges to apartments. This includes washing dishes, running the dish washer, showers, and most of all, washing clothes. Instead of running the dish washer, fill up the sink and hand wash your dishes, then let them air dry. If you must use the dish washer, only wash when it is fully loaded. Take shorter showers, lower the water pressure or choose a bath every now and then instead. When you wash clothes, always use a full load, and line dry them instead of using the dryer. And if at all possible, wash your clothes at your parents house when you get a chance.

Turn off everything when you leave. Your tv, computer and all lights. Don't just turn things off - unplug them. Things till use electricity even when plugged in, including your cell phone charger. Don't worry too much about small appliances, but big energy suckers like computers should be turned off and unplugged every chance you get. Consider switching to a laptop.

Open your curtains instead of using light. Replace your light bulbs with compact flourescent light bulbs. These will save you 75% of your lighting costs.

Don't mess with your thermostat too much. Try to keep it at 68 degrees during the winter and 78 in the summer. Use it less when you're not home.
